English translation of "La Strina"
I've just read on Zagor's blog about someone who wanted the translation of the Strina into English. The Strina is an ancient custom in Calabria, a type of Christmas Carol that was usually sung at night by the people of the villages and countryside, during the time of the holidays, to the wealthy, or landowners. The carolers offered they singing as a symbol of continued loyalty, in return they expected a gift or a act of generosity. Here it goes:
We came without being called
may you be found in good health for another thousand years,
I came last year around this time,
as a gift you game me a calf,
I came last year at Christmas time
as a gift you game me a pig.
May you have as many good days
as there are leaves around these parts,
may you spend as many good years
as there are hung clothes in Rome,
may you make such fine oil
as the water that runs down this reef,
may you make such fine wine
as the water that runs down the Tacina river.
I see a faint low light,
take out the sweets from the trunk,
I see a faint light coming down the stairs,
take out the carafe with the wine.
A mortar is hung at your door,
the head of the house is a knight,
a comb is hung at your door,
the woman of the house is a princess,
we forgot about the children
but we see them as owners in every state.
Get up quickly, don't delay
because it's so cold my cape fell to the ground,
get up quickly don't delay so much
because we were a hundred but only two remain,
get up woman from your white bed,
if you don't have figs, you give us almond candy.
A cat ran away from this house,
let's go because the carol is over.
A modern rendition of La Strina.

Re: English translation of "La Strina"
that's really good!
I'd like to produce a song like that. But i don't speak English very well, so i can't find an artist who is able to sing in English, here in Italy.. I've always met only italian artists.
